Where I’m from, life moves fast. Blink twice and the day is gone. However I do have a heart and this girl that was on the train with me caught my attention for some reason. I perked up as she walked in and took a seat, and I overheard her talking about suicide. A cold chill went through my body at that moment. I wondered to myself what can be that bad that makes you want to end it all. Who gave us that right to decide when it’s over? The struggle is what gives us character…right? I made eye contact with her, and nodded my head for her to come sit next to me in the empty seat. She looked familiar, like I’ve seen her before someplace. I couldn’t help but stare at her and wonder why, why would she want to end it, what was her story, she was beautiful, but something was missing on the inside….

She was a college grad, who had just purchased her first Brownstone in the city, and was on her way downtown to do some shopping to hopefully take her mind off something’s. She said that she hasn’t been on the train since her college days. She decided to leave her Rang Rover uptown someplace and hopped on the train. For a person that seemed to have a lot going on for herself, I had to ask, why?

She told me that she was from a split family, her mother rather spend her days with Captain Morgan than with her. Her father only talked with a leather belt as a child, and then would buy her things the next day as some sort of apology. She said that she was constantly compare to her sister, being told that she will never be as pretty as her sister. They really never had a sister bond, everything was a competition. Her mother made it obvious who was her favorite, and called her names when she was a child. Her grandfather never had anything to say to her, unless he was calling her black girl or fat. She said that the only person that she grew to be comfortable with was her boyfriend that she met when she was 13. I mentioned to her that I thought it was amazing that they were still together, 14 years later. She gave me a cold stare, and then said that it’s no fairy tale between them. She went on to tell me that she got pregnant when she was 17 by him, but knew that she couldn’t have that baby due to the living condition with her family. Even though he stayed with her after that, she thinks back now, that maybe it would have been best if he didn’t. She said, when she was 20 he promised her that he will marry her one day, but she never saw changes.

Instead she watched him become abusive and unfaithful. He went on to have children with someone else, he beat her, blamed her for everything. Even told her that it was her fault that he cheated and started drinking, saying that she picked college over him. As the years went on, so did the pregnancies and the abortions. She looked out the window on the train and said in a whisper tone, “I’ll never have that bastards baby” She said that she even had a hard time with girl friends. She never knew who she could trust or who had her best interest at heart. The harder she tried to fit in the sharper the pain would be when they stabbed her in the back.

I watched as a tear formed in her eye, and I placed a hand on her shoulder. The only words that I could get to come out my mouth was, “Things will be okay” I couldn’t believe that the world we live in today, really places that much power on the outer appearance, so much that the woman in front of me feels that suicide is the answer. To be completely honest, the woman was beautiful, who are these people treating her this way, why can’t they see what I see? What does it take for people to recognize potential? She continued to tell me that she feels as though she worked hard to accomplish the things that she has, but she felt like it was a waste of time due to no one believing in her. She felt like she was only invited to things so that she can pay for them, and her boyfriend only played the boyfriend part on her pay days. I wanted to tell her, that’s not a boyfriend, but this really wasn’t the time for that.

I couldn’t believe that she was still with him after what all he has done to her. I guess that she could read what was going on in my mind cause next she told me that they had a fight last night and he told her that he doesn’t come home at night cause all she does is work. She explained to me that she has to, because he doesn’t contribute to anything. She said her best nights of sleep are when he isn’t there. I stared at her and shook my head to let her know, she doesn’t need to go on about him. His day will come, to treat a woman the way he treats her will grant him nothing but bad luck, especially when he came from a woman. I told her to picture her life as the glass being half full, not empty. It may not seem like it, but she is blessed, she never had his kids therefore she won’t be a statistic of all the single unwed mothers in the world. So what if her sister is known to be prettier, looks only get us so far in life, and true beauty goes beyond what the eye can see. She may not think so, but no matter who we are, there is always, always someone prettier. Her parents will have to answer for what they did and are still doing. Life is a circle, and the day always comes when the children have to take care of their parents. Life is a puzzle without all the pieces. No one is ever a perfect fit, and for the friends that did you wrong, let’s see if they stab the new girl on the block in the back, her name is Karma!

For the first time in my life, I didn’t want to leave someone. I felt like I needed to say more, whatever it took for this girl to change her mind. But, the train slowed down, and her stop was up. We both stared at each other for a second but it felt like it was forever. I watched her as she walked through the doors and the doors close behind her. I looked out the window until I couldn’t see her image in sight anymore. Then I realized where I knew her from. It wasn’t a window I saw her in, or through… IT WAS MY MIRROR.

Amazing how one person can come into the game and turn the rap world on its axis… but that is exactly what Nicki Minaj has done.  In a time where the female mc has become an endangered species, the enigmatic self-titled Harajucku Barbie dropped an atomic bomb on the rap game, without even releasing a studio album! (She broke in through the back door via underground mixtapes.) And it’s not just because she is eye candy to any man, or woman, with a pulse.  All eyes are on Nicki Lewinski, with her laughable, crazy lyrics and acute rhyme sense and style.

But it seems as if Ms Nicki has managed to wake the femme fatale from their extended slumber.  All of this was going through my head as I’m watching the Remix video to Luda’s ‘My Chick Bad’ with Nicki, Trina, Eve, and Diamond.  This video showcased my question perfectly and got me wondering who else is out there putting anything down?  After some research, it looks like some conservation efforts are underway to redeem the femcee role in rap.  So many albums are coming out this year, let’s take a second to name drop.

Buzz started last year with the news that Missy Elliott was planning to release her 7^th album ‘Block Party’ on January 19^th, but as of this date, no album and a Coming Soon release date.  The Queen of Miami, aka Trina, released her new album ‘Amazin’ on May 4^th and debuted in the #1 spot on the Billboard charts.  (*Interestingly, Nicki Minaj and Lady Saw collaboed with Trina on ‘Dang a Lang’ for this album.)  Philly’s finest Eve revealed on Twitter back in January that she left Interscope Records and plans to drop an album this summer tentatively titled ‘Lip Lock’.  Nas’ ex-wife Kelis is shaking up the charts with her pending ‘Flesh Tone’ album slated for release on May 18.  Even British rap artist M.I.A. is making a comeback with plans to release an album this summer.  Call it coincidence or strategic planning, but Nicki Minaj is taking her time with her studio album and also plans to release an album, yet to be titled, this summer.  Hmm….

This summer has the potential to change hip-hop/rap as we currently know it….if these femcees stick to their supposed plans.  It will be great to welcome them back to the stage and the mic.  I hope we’re going to hear lyrics outside of who’s the baddest and who has the best…well, you know.  And I’m curious to see if the ladies will continue to play nice, and how the ‘vets’ are going to handle the get crazy newcomer….I’m just sayin…. Crispus Attucks, a man of African and Wampanoag Native American ancestry, the first casualty of the Revolutionary War

For the next 87 years Africans were brought, sold and enslaved in the United States and most other parts of North and South America, including the Caribbean. Slavery was finally abolished in the U.S. on January 1^st, 1863 (at least on paper) when the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. The problem was, there were no phones to call and relay the news, no instant messenger or emails…just telegraph and word of mouth. Besides the fact that word of mouth was a slow paced method of spreading the good news, most slave masters who heard the news keep it to themselves and got a couple extra years of free labor, especially in Texas, which was still under Confederate control. With nobody there to enforce the rules, the Emancipation Proclamation, essentially meant nothing to the slaves of Texas. On June 18 Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation proclamation. On June 19, 1865, Granger read the contents of “General Order No. 3” in front of a large crowd at  Ashton Villa in Galveston, Texas.

“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere!”

By the time slaves in Galveston, Texas found out they were free, it was two years later, June 19^th, 1865. The slaves in Galveston had a celebration that very night for they were finally free (at least from chains…mentally slavery is still very much alive and unfortunately most of US keep ourselves in it.) The celebration became known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, and it was officially organized on June 19^th of the following year and became an annual festival.

In 1980 Texas made June 19^th a state holiday. Today, although it’s not a national holiday (start sending some letters to congressman and senators to make it happen) it is a state holiday in 35 states and the District of Columbia. African Americans (I use that term loosely but I’ll get into that later) I’m not telling you don’t celebrate America’s Independence Day, but I am telling you to teach your kids about African American Independence day and pull out your grills on June 19^th, because your ancestors weren’t celebrating on July 4^th, 1776…and if they were they stopped on July 5^th once they noticed things hadn’t gotten any better.

Don’t claim ignorance…you’ve been informed!

So this past Monday, I’m flipping through the stations getting really hot and bothered, and slightly annoyed.  Why am I being invited to Ludacris ‘Sex Room’ at 7:45 in the morning?!?  I turn to the next station and I got Trey talking about my neighbors knowing his name.  I turn again and 50 Cent is trying to make me a millionaire if I agree to be his baby mama.  And the next one, Usher and Nicki want to teach me to be a lil freak.  Really though?

This went on for the entire hour of my drive to work.  Now don’t get me wrong.  I don’t necessarily have a problem with any of the above artists.  They do what they do and there is a thing called freedom of speech.  There is also a time and a place for everything.  I remember a time when radio was segregated, if you will, and this theme of music was played during the late evening and night hours, like the Quiet Storm.  The kids are off to bed, and you’re ready to take it down and do some things.  So it was appropriate that these songs were played in the ‘midnight hour’ where ‘we gonna let it all hang out’.

Some of my fondest musical memories were from listening to morning radio.  I remember being about 7 or 8 years old, taking my pillow and comforter down the hall at 6 in the morning to my cousins’ room.  I’d lay right outside her door and listen while she was getting ready for school. Nikki would always have her radio bumping with some of the best music ever!!  ‘Mr. Telephone Man’ by New Edition and ‘Head to Toe’ by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam were just a few of my favorites. And with her generation came the original roots of hip hop, with artists like Biz Markie, ‘Oh Baby You’, Run DMC, ‘It’s like that’, LL Cool J, ‘Rock the Bells’, Big Daddy Kane, ‘Ain’t No Half Steppin’ and who can forget the classic hood anthems ‘The Show’ and ‘La Di Da Di’ by Dougie Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew.

Fast forward a few years to my high school days in the early to mid ‘90’s.  Again, 6 am brought another day to witness the hip-hop movement.  If anyone was paying attention, they noticed the climate of Hip-Hop and R&B had changed, grittier, with gangsta rap battles, East Coast/West Coast rivalries and a more obvious objectification of women. Artists like Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, 2Pac, Biggie Smalls, and Jay Z were now the proponents of the movement. It was enough of a change that my grandparents felt the need to censor what I could listen to at home.  

There was still hope left though.  Artists like Tribe Called Quest, ‘Can I Kick It’, The Refugees, ‘Ready or Not’, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, ‘Parents Just Don’t Understand’ and De La Soul, ‘Me, Myself, and I’, still gave us some of the light hearted flair and storytelling that was so prevalent in early hip-hop.  One of my favorites was Queen Latifah’s ‘U.N.I.T.Y.’, one of the first female rappers and songs that reminded young girls and grown women of our worth in the abject climate of the hip hop culture.

These artists laid the concrete and took the game up another level.  But it seems as if the moderator of the movement changed the topic and the purpose again.  Sense of humor and social awareness have been replaced with sex games and material pursuits.  I need to tell you how much stuff I got, how I swept the streets to get it, and why you’re mad that you ain’t got it.  This ideal has birthed a generation of socially irresponsible thespians, if you will.  Sadly, the Queen Latifah’s and Fresh Prince’s of my generation have been replaced with the Lil Wayne’s and Nicki Minaj’s of my children’s generation.

This brings me back to my original thought and concern.  I don’t need them teaching my daughter how to be a lil freak, nor do I want my son to grow up believing that’s how he is supposed to think about and treat women.  Understand, my children have good role models in their parents, but they are growing up and I can no longer monitor them 24 hours a day.  Now I feel like I can’t allow them to freely enjoy something that was so important to me growing up… the power of music.  Ask any of my friends and they will tell you how much I love music, and I still listen to Lil Wayne, once in a while!  I just wish these radio stations, and the artists for that matter, would be more careful and aware of their influence in terms of social responsibility as opposed to worshipping the almighty dollar.  I’m just sayin….
